Mars Flyte

I’m not entirely sure I approve of this. The people at Mars / Masterfoods were obviously high when they came up with the idea for this because it’s a chocolate bar aimed at dieters.

“Taste the Chocolate… skip some fat” and “Half the fat of solid block milk chocolate”, it proudly proclaims on the wrapper. But in reality it’s just a slightly choclatier Milky Way (that’s 3 Musketeers if you’re in the US) – and it contains almost exactly the same calorie content (441kcal / 100g).

This seems eversoslightly cynical to me. I can just picture some bright spark in the marketing department coming up with the idea to re-package an existing product to extract even more money from the public.

Having said that… I really quite liked it. I’ve always liked the fluffiness of Milky Way, and this is just that little bit chocolatier. You get two mini bars in each pack, and they’re just the right size to stuff into your mouth whilst grinning like a manic 8 year old. Erm… probably.

If you like Milky Way or Mars bars, give these a go. But if you’re on a diet, I seriously doubt it will help much…

Chocolate prevents skin cancer

This is interesting.

Scientists (those clever people!) have found that the flavanoids in chocolate can help prevent skin cancer.

“Moreover, after 12 weeks of consuming the flavanol-rich cocoa, the women’s skin was 16 percent denser, 11 percent thicker, 13 percent moister, 30 percent less rough, and 42 percent less scaly than it was at the beginning of the experiment.”

Unfortunately, it’s not just any chocolate, as normal processing methods remove most of the flavanoids, but Mars are said to be working products that retain their flavanoids.

Personally, I can’t wait. I’m particularly susceptible to skin cancer, so the sooner I can get creme eggs on prescription, the better… 😉

Cadbury Creme Egg Bar

Ok, I admit it – here at Chocablog, we do have something of a Creme Egg fetish. But who doesn’t?

Anyway, after much hunting, Creme Egg Bars (aka ‘Cadbury Dairy Milk with Creme Egg’) have suddenly appeared in all my local shops. And I have taken it upon myself to buy them all.

I have to say, these are rather yummy, but they do suffer a little from the same low fondant-to-chocolate ratio that the mini creme eggs do. Basically, there’s just not enough of it!

I also noticed the fondant appears to be much more orange than the fondant in proper creme eggs. I’m not entirely sure why, but I’m sure there’s a good scientific explanation.

At the moment, these bars appear to only be available in 45g size. Obviously, this isn’t enough, so I have taken to buying at least 2 at once. But the best thing about these is simply the fact that they’re bars. Unwrapping real Creme Eggs in public can be a messy experience and often leads to humiliation when you end up with fondant all over your face while on the bus.

These bars solve that problem instantly, but we must have bigger bars. I won’t be satisfied until I can get a 500g Creme Egg Bar.

It’s not much to ask, is it?

Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme

Hershey’s isn’t something you come across every day here in the UK, so I thought I’d give this a try.

Billed as ‘Chocolate cookie bits in white chocolate’, it sounded just what I needed on a Friday evening.

The bar is quite small and thin, with rather a lot of cookie bits in it. The chocolate is very sweet, but nice enough. My main problem is with the cookie bits. They’re quite dry and don’t have a lot of flavour. Because there’s so many of them, the whole bar is a little dry.

If I was going wanted white chocolate, I’d rather have a Milky Bar.. and if I wanted chocolate with bits in – well, you really can’t beat Cadbury’s assortment of Dairy Milk offerings.

Having said that, it’s nice for a change. I ate it all. But I don’t think I’ll be buying this one again for a while.
