Kinder Surprise

Kinder SurpriseDespite the fact there’s hardly any chocolate in a Kinder Surprise, it’s still one of my all-time favourites. But this little egg is more about what’s inside than the chocolate itself.

If you’ve never had one, Kinder Surprise is a thin milk chocolate egg with a little yellow plastic capsule inside. Stuffed inside the capsule is the surprise – a random toy – usually complete with Ikea-style incomprehensible assembly instructions.

Kinder SurpriseBut before opening this egg, I should mention the chocolate shell.

There may not be much of it (it’s almost paper thin in places), but it’s deliciously smooth and creamy. It’s pretty much the same as the Kinder Chocolate I reviewed back in December – a thin layer of milk chocolate with a creamy white lining inside. According to the wrapper, it’s 15% cocoa solids, 32% milk solids.

But you don’t really buy Kinder Surprise for the chocolate. You buy it for the little yellow capsule – and before you can get to the surprise inside, you have to go through the ordeal of opening it. For this, you will probably need to enlist the help of a small child or you could be there all day.

Kinder SurpriseIn theory, you just pull the two halves apart, but in practice it’s such a tight fit you have to squeeze it with your teeth or hit it with a hammer.

Once inside, you find yourself either a little too excited or slightly disappointed by the contents. And unfortunately I was disappointed by this egg. I had been hoping for a fully functional self-assembly minature nuclear power station – the kind of Kinder toy I remember from my childhood… but all I got was this little purple gorilla.

Such is life.

    Jimmy,
write my e-mail and we can talk specifics about trading what for what. pete502502@yahoo.com. Paperwork is the paper/blueprint/assembly directions that comes with the toys. These are real important to read closely, Ive had a few toys that once I read the paper work better I found out different things the toys do. I am in the Chicagoland area, where are you at Jim. We will have to talk on the phone, I am not just going to send toys out to someone without talking to them first.
Alyson if you just want toys without the chocolate you can buy them on e-bay. Try any eastern European deli’s/grocery stores in your area, they might have them. I get mine from an Albanian grocery store in my area, bought a bunch yesterday, got another fuzzy gorilla!!!!!

I am going back to germany February 2009,my sister is also coming with me. We have decided to bring back more Surprise eggs and if they challenge us at customs we will politely respond back and fight for our eggs.It is the biggest nonsense that I have ever seen.I can understand about not bringing in meat, cheese, fruits, drugs, certain alcoholic beverages are not allowed because of the higher perentage of alcohol, but the eggs, totally stupid. Again why am I not allowed to bring them back for my personal use,i am not selling them, just keeping them. And if we look around at any supermarket,Kmart or other stores like that, there are so many machines that sell little gadgets, just as small or smaller, nobody is stopping them. I just dont get it.

  12. JIMMY

    good for u karin

  13. Nancy

Karin I have never been questioned about bringing kinder eggs back from either Europe or Canada. They are not allowed to be sold here but I have never had anyone try to prevent me from bringing them in! The customs guys coming from Canada always laugh when they ask what I am bringing back. There’s nothing illegal about having them for yourself!

    Hi,

I love collecting the kider toys, but have difficulty eat teh chocolate. Is there a way to use them in a cake for example? I mean does someone have a recipe for that?

  26. kwala

U R lucke… since the beginning of this year all what I’m getting is rockets. No penguins, no rats :(

  27. When I was a kid I remember getting these eggs in my eater basket. Plastic eggs with a candy sort of like tic tacs on one side and a small toy on the other. I hadn’t been able to find them or remember what they were called. I did a search and ran across kindereggs only to find that i can’t buy them in the US anyway. I find out because it’s a choking hazard for children under 3. I don’t understand the problem. The candy is appropriately labeled. Don’t parents supervise or make good judgments anymore? My 6 year old can’t share my joy i had as a kid because some parent can’t read a label. Come on! Anyone know of a petition going around to get these things legalized?

  28. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/kindereggs

I started a petition to get them legalized in the us. Join me in signing?

  29. jono

am i allowed 2 sign it as im only 15 and im australian

    Hi Kinder collectors!

I have a whole stack of Kinder toys I’d like to sell, preferably to a good home.

Unfortunately my mum is relocating for work and I’m having to have a large clearout, including the kinder toys I worked so hard to collect as a child.

The majority of mine were collected in the 90′s and purchased in france.

I have the full collection from 101 dalmations
    8 of th 1993 tortoise/turtles
5 of the 1990 blue hippo models
    8 of the 1992 crocodiles
11 of the 1993 frog collection
4 of the 1993 lion collection

If you are interested contact me on jurassic27@hotmail.com

    Thanks

    Becka

Hey, i have been collecting the gorrilas for a long time now as they are my favourite kinder toys, i have the whole set except the purple one. Is anyone willing to trade? As i also have loads of other kinder toys..

I also have kung fu panda, ice age 3 and the entire set of 10 egyptian cats which were from the old kinder eggs of my childhood, but i think i will keep these as i like them very much.

I have many kinder toys that i dont want such as the bins, various cars and human figures etc. I also have a white bunny that i dont want but thats because part of its fuzzy fur has come off. I also have a spare yellow gorrila that i could trade.

I just really want the purple one :(
    Gemma.

  38. I got some nice little prizes from mine(or at least I like them) from a few years ago. My first one was a little purple fuzzy bird that came with the name “Emma.” It’s fuzz is the same color and texture as that Gorilla. My brother also got one from the same series a year before mine only it was a short fat orange owl. Don’t know his name.

The second one was a little coke can with the side torn open to look like a little front porch. It came with a tiny ogre figurine scratchin’ his belly! Unfortunatley, I lost him and his little home over years of not remembering where I put him. I named him Dennis.

  39. fabian

  41. Prudencia

    Hello,

My son has a school mate who’s grandmother sends kinder toys to him from Mexico. We have not been able to find them here in Chicago. Are there any stores close to the Pilsen area that sell kinder chocolate eggs?

    ‘eggspressive mommy’;)

  42. Dom (Chocablog Staff)

Prudencia – as far as I’m aware, it’s still illegal to sell Kinder Surprise in the US. Your best bet is probably eBay or asking on our forums here. :)

  43. Seth

Hehe last year I had 3 cases of kinder eggs delivered at 82 dollars for 48 eggs. High cost is for 4 lb box flat rate from Germany. Btw it is illegal for a company to ship the eggs to you. It is not illegal if they are a “personal gift” so IE if a business takes payment then has a third part person ship them to you across a border they cannot do anything since its considered a gift or present at that point :D. Thats how i regularly order 3-5 cases each month in fall winter and spring. The other depot employees loved them and alot of them have went TDY to germany. When i brought them in first time and sold for 2 bucks an egg one person had not seen them in over 20 years boy was he tickled hehe. So anyway if any of you in US would like to buy them I can give you the website to visit. skysman@hotmail.com ill send u link with the site listing.

  44. OriginalNick

oh man!!! This brings back memories!!
I agree 100% about the current suckage of the toys… Back in my day the toys were extreme, fully-functioning with like 3 pages of instructions… My best was a gas station with cars and people and actual hoses off the pumps… what I wouldn’t do to see that again…
I think the last one I opened was this green smurfish creature with a red had… Step 1: put hat on Step 2: bang your head against the wall…
    The toys really do sucK!!

  45. Nina

I have over 100 of the toys collected. I must get rid of them. All are from the Late 90s early 2000s. Only a few doubles and a few puzzles. Iamnina3178@gmail.com
