Galaxy Smooth Dark

It’s been a while since I wrote a review for Chocablog.  However, when Sainsburys gave me a free 125g bar of the new Galaxy Smooth Dark chocolate (and I’d already eaten through about half of it), I thought it would be a good idea to come on and inflict my opinion of it on you.

The packaging design falls into the simplicity category – the familiar Galaxy logo is on the paper wrapper, albeit in darker silkier tones than normal.  The foil underneath also echoes the rich coppery hues.

At this point, though, I do have to make a complaint.  Galaxy, WHY do you have the nutritional information for a 46g bar on the wrapper when it’s actually a 125g bar?  Not only is it the height of laziness, it’s also highly misleading – you can’t even really claim 46g is a portion size, because there’s no earthly way you can divide the bar into 46g portions without weighing scales, a lot of patience and a bit left over.  Sort it.

Unwrapping reveals a slab of dark chocolate in a five by five grid of little wavy squares (I think… remember, I ate half of it before it occurred to me to do a review… I’m extrapolating from the bits left).  They look as though they wouldn’t snap cleanly, but actually mostly they do.  It looks fairly unassuming, it’s the taste where this bar really comes into its own.

Now, I’m not normally a fan of dark chocolate.  There is no way I would have actively chosen to buy this bar.  However, it’s actually really nice.  It’s not overly sweet, like the milk version of Galaxy chocolate, but there’s no bitter aftertaste either.  It has a rich and smooth texture and is actually very pleasant.  I’d buy it again.

For hard-core dark chocolate fans, this is probably going to be too mild for you.  But if you like non-sweet chocolate without the bitterness hangover, Galaxy’s new offering might be just the job.

I nodded heartily to the bit about nutritional info – unless they write the grams on the pieces I don’t see how anyone could ascertain how many 46gram sections they had eaten!

I agree with Annabelle.Regardless of that I was still drooling while reading the article.

  3. This chocolate sounds like something I’d like to taste test myself. Can it be easily found for purchase?

Teresa – it’s available in my local Sainsburys (UK) and it’s not a huge branch, so I assume it’s fairly easily found.

i just bought this… and was highly disappointed. i noticed from the very first bite that it was absolutely brimming with sugar… eurgh! dark chocolate implies bitter and strong. yet this bar was smooth, silky, sweet. personally, i could never recommend this to fellow dark chocolate lovers.

I’m not a fan of dark chocolate but had a bar of this in a Galaxy easter egg pack and i must say it was actually quite delicious.
It wasn’t at all overpowering as most dark chocolate is, had a nice smooth texture and wasn’t half as sickly as Galaxy’s milk chocolate.

I bought this Dark Galaxy in a West London Branch of Tesco about three weeks ago. I thought it was the nicest plain chocolate I’ve ever tasted, at least as good as any premium brands. It was clean and not cloying. But since then I have been unable to find it in various Tescos. It’s as if it’s been Withdrawn!
I only found this website because I was beginning to worry I was imagining I’d had, in fact, a Galaxy product after all! I wanted to check if such a thing really existed! From what other people are saying it is clear that everyone has different expectations of a chocolate bar. However I would say to anyone, try the Galaxy Dark if its still on sale. I rate it Good.

Stephen – I saw it in my local Waitrose yesterday, so it’s still around!

Galaxy dark chocolate makes the best chocolate mousse of any, and I mean any, brand of dark chocolate. Which makes it very sad that I haven’t been able to find any for months and months. Please don’t say that it isn’t made any more.

Thank you Hilary, I have finally found another person that is questioning what on Earth happened to the Galaxy Smooth Dark bar. I too have been searching for it for months and months, from Tesco and Sainsburys to convenience stores all across London. I can’t stand the craving any more!! Somebody find me one!!

  12. I’m actually eating Galaxy Smooth Dark Chocolate right now. Yeah, I have to agree with others. It’s good but not great enough for hard-core dark chocolate fans like me. lol
