Cadbury Highlights

What is Cadbury Highlights?

“Smooth milk chocolate with no added sugar”

Yes, you read that right. This is chocolate with no added sugar…

“Excessive consumption may produce laxative effect”

Er….Ok. So what does it contain?

A quick glance at the ingredients on the wrapper reveals the number one ingredient is “Sweetner (Maltitol)”. A quick search of Wikipedia reveals:

Maltitol is a sugar alcohol (a polyol) used as a sugar substitute. It has 90% of the sweetness of sucrose (table sugar) and nearly identical properties, except for browning. It is used to replace table sugar because it has less calories, does not promote tooth decay and has a somewhat smaller effect on blood glucose. Unfortunately, maltitol is well known to cause gastric distress, particularly if consumed in great quantities.”

Gastric distress? Eeep!

Luckily I only have a small bar of this to try out… and I’m willing to take a risk for Chocablog!

Opening the wrapper reveals a bar looks just like a standard Dairy Milk bar. Divided into six chunks, the colour is the same. It smells the same.

But the taste is definitely different. The flavour is similar to the kind of cheap chocolate you get in no-brand easter eggs. Artificial. Slightly plasticy. Chocolate-but-not-quite-chocolate.

It’s not an offensive taste, but it’s certainly not as nice as Dairy Milk. I happily ate the whole thing, but I don’t think I would have wanted a bigger bar. The whole “gastric distress” thing put me off a bit anyway.

So. If you’re on some kind of low sugar diet, give this a try. If you’re just trying to lose weight, I recommend buying something a little more luxurious… and eating it more slowly.

I tried this last night. I also picked up the Tesco own brand version. To my surprise the Tesco version has a taste of Belgian chocolate about it. Cadbury version: 160 calories; 10.4g fat, 35g weight (miserly). Tesco version: 227 calories (ouch); 16.4g fat (fairly low); 45g weight. Choices choices…

Oh hang on. I just looked at a regular Dairy Milk. Calories 255, but fat 14.6 – LOWER than the Tesco bar. Confusing.

    Thanks

Michael: Given how big Tesco in Aylesbury is, I would think it’s quite likely it’s been discontinued if you can’t find it there.

hi, I´m not English , so I hope you would take that into concideration when I make some spelling and grammar mistakes. I apologize for my english. I love chocolate. I came across this blog by accident and I thought ” now that´s something I love”. I saw the post about sweet truffels, and I do belive they are unbelivably unike. i also once had somthing similar, but instead of vodka the truffels were filled with greek ouzo. The hart of the truffel was so soft and tender. they were fantastic. On the outside, the truffels were covered with powdered bitter cocoa.

I really like this Highlights bar :o) I only have a couple of chunks at a time anyway, so the ‘Laxative Effect’ probaby won’t be an issue, and I expect you’d have to eat several bars to experience any ‘Gastric Distress’… It’s yummy, tastes like Cadbury’s choc should do – didn’t find it plasticy or artificial at all :o) no-guilt-choccy. Fab!
