Cadbury Gorilla Advert

Posted by in Misc on September 1 2007 | Leave A Comment

I just had to share this TV ad… someone in Cadbury’s marketing department has clearly been putting hallucinogenic drugs in the chocolate…

There’s a higher quality version on the Cabdury website – (assuming you can stand to listen to Phil Collins in higher quality).

I’m sorry, but I can’t quite make out the connection between the gorilla on the drums and a bar of dairy milk.

  2. Dom (Chocablog Staff)

That makes (at least) two of us. 🙂

  3. l.carla

maneiro, que criatividade, parabens pelo bom gosto

  4. Tim

I love it. That moment when the drums kick in is the best bit of that song. Miami Vice now choclate what next for little Phil? lol

  5. caz

has something to do with genisis(IN THE BEGINING)as we came from apes and choc.something very deep and meaningful.unless he phil collins stand in

  6. lee

hey i want to put that advert on my mobile because me and my borhter are seeing who can get it first [i will win £5 if i get it first] so if you could email it to me that would be great full

  7. Chris

This looks too close to a West 49 ad that was out in Canada a few months back.

    Check it out here.

    Makes you wonder…

  8. sarah

does nobody get this? cadburys are just the first brand to sucessfully exploit the cultural phenomenon of these quirky little videos – the biggest sites on the internet are things like youtube which are full of these random bizarre videos that get people talking – whatever ad agency cadburys are using are just hi-jacking this trend and attaching it to the cadburys brand – pretty successful if you were to judge by how many forums already are talking about them now thanks to this ad. there isnt meant to be a connection between gorillas, genesis and chocolate – except maybe the idea of guilty pleasures – the tagline at the end says something about pure joy?

  9. Dom (Chocablog Staff)

Sarah – you’re quite right of course. It’s not mean to “mean” anything, it’s just meant to get people talking – and it looks like it’s working!

  10. john

its not phil collins in the ad. phils left handed that kits set up for a right handed drummer.

  11. the first time i saw this i thought it was going to be a full out song untill i saw the cadburys sign at the end, and yeah i thought its a bit over the top for a bit of chocolate. but if they had’nt of done the monkey bit with the drums (hahaha) and left the chocolate till the end. Would i sit and watch the whole thing. i dont think i would to be honest. so i think its a great eye catcher and a good idea for definate.. not bad for a screen saver for ya television either..

  12. Squib786

Great Ad,,, we need more of this on tv…

    Top marks Cadbury’s ….

  13. suzy

Best advert i’ve seen for ages. Makes me smile everytime i see it!!!!!.

  14. Lela

dont care what it means, laughed till I pee’d. genius of cadbury and the advertising agency to go with it – and brave too. hadnt thought about the you tube phenomena connection though and you are right.

  15. This is such as good advert. Very clever by Fallon and Cadbury!

  16. MARAGLIANO

  20. Why is everyone trying to analise the amazing Cadbury Gorilla advert! Just enjoy it for what it is – incredible piece of advertising.
    Jenny

  21. Yasmine

Haha I love this advert too; but i have been told that the connection is that there are gorillas in the countries the cadbury cocoa beans come from!!!i suppose everyone has there own little ideas!!xxx

  22. lou

seriously good advert! but please stop analysing it sarah was right there is no connection, its not phil collins in the suit bog all to do with cocoa beans, just an advert that doesnt actually have the product in it to make you feel entertained rather than conned into buying it!
i will certainly buy a cdm everytime im in need of a chocolate rush cos i’ll get the great wee image of that gorrilla hammering away on the drums every time!

  23. Angel12

Awesome advert!! Wots annoying is now, most tv stations only play a small section of it!! Please play the whole thing, it’s genius!!!

  24. Lexie

The best explaination I’ve read is that the song is about waiting all your life for one moment (eating the chocolate), and the gorilla has waited his whole life to beat something other than his chest.

  25. Sara

I have to analyse this for my Media work.
    Pretty awesome ad 🙂

  26. Tom

    From the cadbury website:
Well it just seemed like the right thing to do. There’s no clever science behind it – it’s just an effort to make you smile, in exactly the same way Cadbury Dairy Milk does. And that’s what we aim to continue to do; simply make you smile. So if a drumming gorilla’s not enough, wait until you see what else we have up our sleeves.
    Sign up if you’re curious…”
    Tom

  27. Lou

I think it is absolutely bloody genius!!! I have just demolished an entire bar of CDM beacuase the gorilla makes my day!!

  28. Simon

    Best random gorilla story ever.
Apparently someone in Uganda was shooting gorillas with tranquilising darts and dressing them in clown suits.
It only came to light when one of these unfortunate creatures blundered into a village somewhere.
Now THAT’S random – and a great prank too.

  29. RUDDIFUL

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ADVERTS I THINK ITS GREAT QUALITY

  30. i think this ad is mint! dnt care wot it means its always gona make me smile!!!

  31. india

who wears the gorilla suit or is it realy

  32. Ashley

is the gorilla a man in a suit?? or is it all just computer generated? reply asap x

  33. Dom (Chocablog Staff)

    It’s a man in a suit.

  34. it was very unexpected and the song was mint i love that advert

  35. Lexi

Im gutted to now find out that Its a man in a Suit!!
    Truly Gutted!!

That is the most Awesome Advert I have seen in my 18 years of being Alive!! Ahahaha.. Makes me Laff everytime!! Pure Genius!!

I also have to add.. Sky + Is a genius too.. It let me Record it =] .. I Can watch it whenever I wanna!! Wicked shit!! =] =]

  36. Dom (Chocablog Staff)

Lexi: I suppose there’s always the possibility that Cadbury spent 15 years training a wild gorilla how to play drums (and how to listen to Phil Collins without “going ape”…)

  37. Lexi

    Seriously.. Was Gutted!! Lol

Anyways.. Im goin ina mood now, Cause I Cant Download it!! I need it on me phone!! Lol!!

    Any Ideas??

    x

  38. Dom (Chocablog Staff)

No idea where you’d get a downloadable version, sorry.

Interestingly, Cadbury seem to be pushing the full length commercial more on TV again – I’m guessing that means that they’ll have a new ad out very soon…

  39. craig

go on zamzar.com u can get youtube clips =D

  40. hi i would really love to get this on my mobile but am not sure how to do it please could you help me out thanks….

  41. Suey Fagan

Pure geneious. It is what advertising is all about. The advert has achieved what it is supposed to do even though you don’t see a bar of chocolate.

  42. x.. P R i N C 3 S S ..x

    simply——–what a rush

  55. please keep this advert on Tv it’s great, nice touch during the world cup semi (come on lads) and the same for this weekend please….thanks, phil collins is great also!!!

  56. Chris

You are all missing the point. There is no connection between chocolate and gorillas or chocolate and Phil Collins. It’s all about fun.

For those that asked, the gorilla is definitely a man in a suit but it isn’t Phil Collins.

  57. bmk

does it really matter that there is no connection between the gorilla and chocolate.
    it is a quality advert.

  58. Abbo

Who is the drummer in the gorilla suit? My dad says it’s a real gorilla. You can tell by the way how he is licking the chocolate of his lips.

I know because I went to school at the same time as Phill Collins……………………………. quarter to nine!!

  59. Clarence Beeks

    Mystery Solved?!?!

It’s definately the same gorilla in “Trading Places” with Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy. Hope this has put everyone out of their misery.

    Enjoy!

  60. dan

i think this advert is great the best i have seen in a long time,as a big phil collins it can’t be bettered

  61. janet

The advert is bollocks. the only good thing is the song when the drums drop. except that no. A BETTER ADVERT is the Magic advert… with Micheal Buble singing that amazing song.

  62. Rob Jones

It won’t make me buy chocolate but its a brilliant advert. As good as the Smash advert.

  63. Bob Sinfield

Pure Enjoyment Eating Chocolate, just like the gorilla
    ‘s face pure enjoyment.
    GREAT advert and music.

  64. Ted

Best advert since James Nesbitt’s Hairdresser ad for yellow pages

  65. Chris

It is said that Gorilla’s can pick up the scent of Cocoa Beans, and well know what chocolate is made out of, that is the connection, and also Gorilla’s bang their chests if they smell something they like, so that is connection between everything.

  66. Paul

    Hi guys,

the guy in the gorilla suit is a guy called Juan, look it up in the ad companies website!!

  67. Paul

Hi sorry guys, it is a guy called Garon Michael in the suit not Juan. Juan is the guy who devised the advert!

  68. Fran

This advert is absolutly excellent. I got the song of iTunes and now I see a drumming gorilla in my head every time I listen to it! It’s great! Is it a man in a suit? Actually, don’t tell me- it would ruin my birthday (today)!!!!!

  69. Sharon

Aww paul, you just ruined that girl’s birthday.

  70. Monica

Janet’s sounds like she’s in a baaaaaaad mood!!!

  71. lainey

if it wasn’t a man in a suit then wouldn’t it be against an animal cruetly law or something?

  72. lol !!!!!!!!! it is the best loooooooooooooool!!!

  73. brad

haha a love this advert its f****n brill!!!

  74. Lina

THE MOST AWESOME VID I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! PURE GENIUS.
I DONT EAT CHOCOLATE BUT HAVE JUST BOUGHT A BIG CADBURYS CHOC IN HONOUR OF THIS MAGNIFICENT STUFF. I SHALL BE REPLAYING THIS FOR A LONG LONG TIME!! LINA.

  75. Rob

The reason behind the advert is very simple. Phil Collins songs are known for 2 things: 1) Their simplicity, or even their complete lack of apparant skill to write them. And 2) Lots of people like them despite the apparent lack of skill.

The gorilla drumming is ripping the song in the sense it’s saying even a gorilla can drum along to it and secondly that, from his obvious connection to the song, that he really likes it (hence the guilty pleasure).

  76. zoe

its well gud that gorilla advert

  77. mimie allen

I think the advert is fabulous!

  78. Jess

Errm, if it was a real gorilla dont you think the animal rights people would be in there straight away??

For some reason my dads totally stuck on the idea that its a real gorilla. It really isnt. lmao.

Tbh, it doesnt matter if there isnt a connection. Its a GRREEAAT advert, like the best I’ve seen in my entire 13 years of living. (Y)

    Yay. x

  79. lozza

THIS IS BRILL NO MATTER WAT ANY1 SAYS, I LOVE IT..!!!!!!!

  80. the guy

lol funny ad THE GUY produtins

  81. gai

the whole advert lasts for 1 and a half minutes and the cadburys slogan is 1 and a half glass of pleasure and the gorilla is having fun for 1 and a half minuets the fact tht it is a gorilla doesnt matter thy picked tht cuz it’ll be hard for a dog to play drums

  82. Laird

Well i think it is one of the best adverts of all time itz so smoothly put together!! And it deserves sme sort of award coz really it is fantastic!!!

  83. RON

The very fact that so many people are talking about it just goes to prove the advert is working. That is the connection!!!!!

  84. **THECHAZZ

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ADVERTISING THINGS IVE EVER SEEN…SO FUNNI

  85. Mitchell

is the gorilla in the ad real or is it an actor all the way through we are having a debate please reply asap thanx

  86. Trust me i loooooooooooove it,the gorrila looks so real.the brain behind it it a genius.

  87. Tony

It’s intended to remind people how great the chocolate is.
The sight of the gorilla drumming along to Phil Collins should make you smile, just like a slab of Dairy Milk.

Motors in the head are remote controlled by two puppeteers to make the facial movements.
There’s a video screen inside the head so he can watch the performance and bring the body in line with what’s happening facially.

None of this matters really because if the gorilla was real it would be genius.
Its not real but the robotics convinced us it might be. Still genius.

    Enjoy…..

  88. curt rogan

i thought the ape was real, sick outfit, its mint

  89. emma

think about it, they using a different method to get you
to think of the chocolate, when u hear that music u will remember the Advert for the chocolate.

  90. becky

this advert is the flippin greatest!!! I love it. I don’t even know what it is. Its just random and enjoyable

  91. sarah

love this advert its great and who cares what it means its just an advert

  92. tom

Love the advert and looks great, but is it real? or just another good bit of video editing? really makes you remember and want to go out and buy a bar of dairy milk!lol

  93. Scott

Am I the only one who dislikes this advert?!

Adverts like this wind me up. Entirely pointless and uninformative.

But… all credit to the advertising bods, they’ve managed to get a load of people talking about it which means they have succesfully achieved their aim. Well done to them.

I just wish we weren’t all so gullable!!

  94. Scott

    Arrrgh!!!

Even I’m talking about it now!!!!

  95. Brad

This is quite a good advert…fair enough there is no connection between a Gorilla and Cadbury’s but it just makes you think…well it makes me think anyway! Its something unusual and I like it.

To add, I maybe young, but I thought the whole point of adverts was to show entertainment on TV and not to sell products…there isn’t one advert that you see on TV that is just there for the sake of it or to entertain people.

  96. kappacino kid

The great thing about this ad is that there are lots of ads out there that everyone thinks, hey waht a fantastic ad, although I can’t remember what it is for, this one we are all talking about and we know what is for … gorillas right?

  97. daniel jarvis

how can i download this video 4 my p.c

  98. Max Martin

There are some really idiotic ads. out there and despite seeing them many times, we often don’t know what they are for. First time I saw it, I was questioning why was a gorilla listening to Phil Collins music – slow motion expectation on the camera zooming out revealed a gorilla sitting next to the drums. NOW, we all know what it is all about. As an ad is just pure genius – not only is entertaining but we all know what it is advertising.

  99. Steffo Rosso

Well i do say…I love it, it is such an inspiration to culture because it reflects my whole life in one piece of chocolate. Minted!! Bo ya kasha. Loadsa love to my sexy gorilla, love it! drive safe m8h’s!

  100. ramesh savalani

Is phil collins in the suit?
    It’s a wacky idea!

  101. daniel jarvis

phil has seen it & he has said that the lad is better drummer then him it was on the t.v.they asked him what he thought of the ad & he said it was well funny

  102. CAUSE EVERY SLIGHTLY STRANGE IDEA HAS SOME CONNECTION TO DRUGS

  103. My husband thinks this ad is fantastic. He cant stop watching it, its the only advert he watches all the way through. Normally he flicks the channels when ad’s are on.
I think its great too. Really good way to get people talking.

  104. Amy

Ummm well if the Gorilla is a guy in a suit then how does it blink and there are actual eyes in it??

  105. robert

it is a real gorolla and a suited guy and trick camera and computor work

  106. Taylah

    iis That a real gorilla?

i am strongly against animal cruelty =]

  107. grant brett

i think it a great advert and a mint song and i dont think any animals were hurt in the making of the video

  108. Ez

    it’s about passion.

    the gorilla is real. ;o)

how you all read so deeply into it, its a simple visual metaphor – chocolate is a passionate affair as is drumming, plus imagine a Gorilla drumming – there’s your extra half glass in a glass and a half.

Ez – art direction + design

  109. Dan E4

The relevance is hidden within the advert.

    The Advert is 90secs long.

It takes roughly that to eat a bar of cadbury’s dairy milk.

What Cadbury’s are trying show is a minute and half of pure joy but not obviously some actor just eating it on tele n get our tastesbuds watering.

90secs of Joy, Great Choc, Better Advert….

  110. Goldengirl

Well, my mum said that the guy who sings the song plays the drums. So maybe the guy who is singing the song is in a gorilla suit and there’s some computer and camera tricks.
OUr family spent about an hour coming up with ideas on who it works!!!=]=] hehe!

    AMAZING ADVERT. IT’S VERY COOL¬_¬

  111. tom

it is a guy in a suit called garon michaels n does anyone know where i can download this vid!!!

  112. The gorilla is real, that’s wot makes it so gud, any1 can stick a suit on, gorillas act so human like, u can film them bangin about on drums and then ad the music afetr 2 make it look like it’s really playin the song, corse it prob tuk sum time filmin 2 get it 2 luk just rite, but if they can get chimps 2 make Tea, they can do this! and i believe they av!

  113. Grace and Danyelle

    You are all bum-heads!!!
    haha

  114. That advert has to be the best advert which has ever been made, everyone else you dont know what you are talkin about

  115. RecursiveS

    Simply the best advert ever…

So many little things you don’t see the first time….

    I love it…

Where can I dl it so I can see it forever?

  116. Bob

great ad. the idea is that you wonder why does that have anything to do with cadbury, then it gets stuck in your head because you are wondering. And if its stuck in your head you will be thinking of cadbury all the time and want to buy it more:P

  117. JSHUGHES

There is not meant to be a similarity between the fucking chocolate and the gorilla on the drums, it just attracts alot of people cz its funny than they have their brand name ‘Cadburys’ to go on the front cover. its called advertising, feckin ell mate.

  118. Jergun

Yo people really need to lighten up man, this advert is about what it feels like to do something you love, hence the gorilla beating on the drums, taking deep breathes to show how much he is loving beating the drums to phil collins I can feel it, and it is trying to compare this feeling to eating a bar of dairy milk. Dam am only 13 years old I still seem to understand this advert. Why r people always tring to make a big deal out of nothin, pls people just relax, u need a break, don’t have a KItKat have Dairy Milk or sumthing.

  119. Jergun

Y is people stressing over something so simple

  120. Ali

I LOVE THE CAADBURY’S GORILLA ADVERT BUT CANT DOWNLOAD IT IF ANY1 CAN PUT IT ON A WEBSITE AND MAKE IT DOWNLOASD IT WILL REELI HELP ME

    THANK YOU

  121. annie

This is the best ad ever! But tell me its a mix of real gorrilla and man-in-suit? (clever editing!) And where/how can I download it?
I will try to remember what it is advertising…….but really , who cares – its fab! Annie

  122. din

Why are some people getting worked up, it’s only an advert!! A damn fine, absolutely brilliant one!! Love it, everytime it comes on.

  123. matt

Leave this alone, it was brilliant and fun, let it rest as a great piece of advertising, with a classic film and soundtrack. I loved it and sent it to my brother in USA, who loved it, brilliance is universal. stop trying to work out if man=monkey or monkey=man.

    Its great

  124. Hello, I would really, really, REALLY appreciate your help with this.

It is a short survey about the Cadbury Dairy Milk Advert:

    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=9_2btc4B3OtjVO46CSJGcWWw_3d_3d

    Thank you so much

  125. O

this is the most pointless advert i have ever seen if i was the client i would cry over every second of wasted money i put into it. I love cadburys but this will not get me to buy their chocolate, it just makes me think of how low the audience/target market’s intelligence is now days. I study marketing/motion picture medium and media/television, and this advert is the biggest load of sh*t i’ve ever seen.

  126. Al

My only wish is for them to broadcast this ad in the united states. I’ve been watching ads for years now because it relates to the line of work I’m in and at the same time they stepped it up in entertainment values such as the GEICO commercials however this tops them undeniably.

Simple, when I see this I see love and I feel love and I feel free and what better way to make a connection than with chocolate…

  127. consultant

    Hi

This is a brilliant piecce of advertisisng. Can some one send this ad to me or let me know where I can download it. Need to send it to my Fiance.

    Thanks

  128. Look, you can’t analyse the ad because it was obviously dreamed up in a pub late one evening as an amusing thought. No doubt it was presented to a number of clients until one said, “Yeah OK, that’s different, nothing else is working so lets try it.” Bingo. Sales of cadbury’s have gone up.
The Tango ad of many years ago – man walks out of office and ends up in boxing ring on Dover cliffs – was presented to 5 clients before Tango bought it.
The key point is that it’s started to make clients wake up to the fact that people buy entertainment first and sales messages second. Boring ads – 95% of them – don’t work. You need to emotional engage people, most ads don’t engage anyone. And I’m saying that working in the ad industry.

  129. jacob

hehe my mum thinks the gorilla is real

  130. Alex

how do you download it to your phone?

  131. Jodie

What a great advert! I believe its very well edited. . I think its partly a real gorilla in some parts and partly a costumed actor which i believe is called goran Micheals. . (i think). . . I’ve seen a gorilla close up, and they do look surreal, . . The reason cadburys are doing the ‘half productions’ is if you notice, they are all about 60 sec’s long. . On average the time it would take u to eat a dairy milk, the adverts all show passion and affection in some way. . . You know what they say,. . Chocolate is better than sex!! Lol x x

  132. daniel

wish i could get a gorila outfit like that so i could scare the shit out of the neighbours

  133. The 90 second clip involves an actor (Garon Michael) in a gorilla suit, preparing mentally for engaging with Phil Collins song, In The Air Tonight and points people to a web site, A Glass And A Half Full Productions. The ad is designed purely for viral entertainment value, and to raise awareness of the Cadbury glass and a half logo.

  134. laura

is the gorrila a real one or a man in a suit

  135. Ellen

What bad taste this advert is. Cadbury’s portrays the gorilla in their advert and at the same time, uses palm oil as an ingredient in their products. The apes natural rainforest habitat is being cleared on a large scale to make room to grow those very palms from which the oil is extracted.Shame on you Cadbury’s for not doing your bit for the environment.

  136. Cassidy

wow all i want was a few peoples comments 4 my homework but Ellen your quite right
    SHAME ON U CADBURY
but on that note i still can’t taste the difference between palm oil and the other stuff although i’m only 13 so mabey it’s just my taste buds but seriously people whats all the fuss about

  137. stafford bain

its not supozed to it just grabs ur attention.

  138. maggot

i love this ad and the eyebrows one tooo

  139. maggot

btw its just an ad haha
