I was hoping someone could help me to find this product that I bought about 10 years ago. I believe I read about this originally in a magazine somewhere about some incredibly rich hot chocolate that is sold in glass jars and is solid at room temperature because of the high content of fat and cocoa butter. I ordered it, and it was the best stuff I've ever drank in my life. Incredibly expensive, but I remember that it came in glass jars, and as you heated it, it became liquid, and you could drink it. One jar was probably meant to be more than one serving, but piggy me, I downed it in one sitting. Anyways, can you help me find it?? I've been looking to get it again for years now.

Hi there, Yep me and my husband have been numerous times, though we don;t get chance to visit very often nowadays, may I just add for other readers, it's a fantastic day out for children, as not only can you give them (at your disrection) chocolate treats that cost you nothing, but they can learn and see how chocolate is made, educating them in a great art, and there is a ride for younger children that they will find exciting and fun.

The samples they give are full sized bars so be sure to take a bag for your goodies to carry home in, and they also have the best shop where you can buy cheap oddments and broken bits quite cheaply as well as full size retail bars, they offer a full extensive range of their chocolate, and the smell is just to die for, so even if you're like me and lactose intolerant so sadly can;t eat the goodies you can wander around in the pure essence of the smell of the chocolate, though be sure to have eaten before you go in, otherwise the wonderous smell of the melting and tempered chocolate will have your tummy grumbling all the way around lol.

It's a wonderful day out and offers free samples to boot, what more can you ask for =)

awww sadly I think they discontined making them, I remember exactly the box you mean as I purchased the same box for my mother who used to love plain chocolates and was a fan of Terry's of York.

But since Terry's and Rowntree's was taken over by Nestle foods I think they discontinued them, there are some items that still retain the "logo" name of Terry's due to their success and high revenue sales, but technically the terry's name no longer exsists, which is a shame as they produced some of the most exciting and exotic ranges in the chocolate industry.

Myabe you could write to Nestle as I'm sure they will have the old recipes and details of all the ranges that Terry's and Rowntree's of York used to create and sell, they may be able to at least provide you with the names of the chocolates and you never know if they know theirs still interest they may even get out the old recipe book and recreate them.

Good Luck and I hope you get your chocolates you thoroughly enjoyed all those years ago. =D

Hiya all I'm new to the site but can I just say I love discussing chocolate and the smell of it as much as anyone even though I am unable to consume it's naughty goodness.

hehehe here's a free idea for you Dom, as I fully understand where youre coming from for not wishing to invite strangers into your home.

How about during the summer (I know our weather is extremely unpredictable)but how about a chocolate picnic (lol excuse the pun, my husband just pointed that out to me), but you could have chocolate sandwiches, chocolate cakes, hot chocolate or cold chocolate drinks, and of course the good ole choocy bars.

Wish I could join you but sadly I'm lactose intolerant so cannot enjoy this sumptous, velvety, yummy, sensous, wonderful, indulgent food. I can sadly only consume the 70%+ cocoa dark type, or the false, traitorous, decieving, disguised soya type, which really isn't chocolate at all. And the dark type is not so wonderful in large quantities, it's really one of those treats that can be endured in small quantities at any one time.

feel free to use if you wish and happy scientific observations ;P

Thorntons are really just a superior chocolate producer, I prefer Hotel Chocolat and their ridiculous prices (but ridiculously good!!)

I think, Lindt do a Coffee dark chocolate bar, I've seen them at Waitrose (UK) so they might have jumped over the pond to the USA.
Theres many many different Lindt products and I'm sure theres something there they'd like, personally I'm not a Lindt fanboy, more Ferrero but Lindt are a certain winner.

If you know any more about what your mother/father likes that would help if you need any more suggestions.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I think I agree that Lindt is going to be the best option. They are decent priced, have a good selection and I know my mom already likes them.

Right now, I'm thinking of doing a little basket of things, so I'm thinking of:

2 bags of truffles (I'm between Stracciatella, Snowman, Peanut Butter and Hazelnut)

2 bars (I'm liking the Sracciatella, White Coconut, White Almond Chocolate, Filled Wafer and Double Milk Chocolate... This one is a hard one, I may have to increase the number of bars ;-) )

1 Bag of Assorted Fiorettos (My dad likes coffee, so I thought this would be nice for him)

1 Box of the Petit Dessets (I'm leaning toward the Ballotin because of the Millefeuille)

I haven't narrowed everything all the way down, there are so many options. I did find the Lindt products at my local Target tonight and they were a little lower in price on what they offered and they had the truffles on sale. It doesn't look like the Lindt store has sales, so I may pick a few things up at each place.

I also found a Peterbrooke Choclatier as well. I haven't gone into the store, but looking at their products, they don't seem to be as good as the other options, so I may just skipped that one.

I looked up Thornton's and it looks like they are only the UK and I'm located in the US... but they do have some very tasty looking products :D

Thanks again for your reply, I really appreciate it!

Personally, I recommend Lindt, theyre fairly priced and have always been of exceptional quality, Godiva are also good but a little bit pocket-burning, if you know what I mean!
Is there a Thorntons local to you? They often make good chocolates, especially gift boxes ideal for these situations!

Hope this helped!

Hello,

I'm looking to buy some chocolates for my parents as gifts and I have a few too many options and was hoping to get some suggestions from the experts.

Harry & Davids: I recently moved and the area I live in has a ton of shopping with a lot of stores I've never been to and several I've been discovering. When I was Christmas shopping the other day I came across Harry & David's and bought a few things, not really knowing what else was available to me at the time.

I ended up getting several things, but most of it was not chocolate, I only ended up getting two chocolate bars. I assumed the chocolate was good based on what I've heard from others, but when I was leaving the store they offered me a sample of a chocolate, it was very hard (I almost couldn't take a bite) and somewhat sour. I've heard so many good things I don't think this would be how their chocolate is and I also noticed some of the chocolates they had out were outdated, so I'm thinking they may have given me one that was outdated. I'm just a little concerned now that the stuff they sell may not be worth what they charge.

Godiva: After making my purchase at Harry & David, I also found a Godiva store. Right away I could tell the store was much nicer, they were making some chocolate right there, the staff was very friendly and they only sold chocolate. However, looking at the prices I was a questioning whether or not they would be worth it.

Ghiradhelli: This wasn't one of my original ideas, but I can get a discount in one of their stores. I've had their chocolates and enjoy them, but I'm kind of thinking I want to get something a little more special as a gift.

Lindt: This is the option I'm leaning toward. My mom and I discovered some of the Lindt truffles last year and we absolutely loved them, we've tried the milk chocolate and whilte choclate as well as one of the bars and all were fantastic. I found out there is a Lindt store at the mall I will be going to next week, so I'm thinking this would be a great time get something there. I've been looking on their site and see there are a lot different and unique options to get. There are several bars and truffles I would like to get and I also really like the idea of the Petit Desserts.

So my main questions are:

Is Harry & David's chocolates (and other products) worth the price, or was the chocolate I sampled not a fluke?

Regardless of how good Harry and David's is, which of the other three brands do you recommend to get some gifts for Christmas?

Thanks so much for your help and I appreciate any replies!

I've been to a few, if staying at home playing FIFA with a Thorntons/Milk tray box counts :P
Theres alot of amazing shops in London with virtually anything...
Saw some 'healthy' low fat Mango and Papaya chocolate earlier.
